Baker & Scone

Happy Sunday, everyone! I hope you’re having a great weekend, and that you enjoyed my last post about high tea at The Guelph Boathouse. I’m still dreaming about those delicious freshly-baked scones, which gave me the inspiration for today’s post. If you’re a regular reader, you probably know that I love baked goods of all kinds – from cupcakes to croissants and everything in between – but I have a particular fondness for scones. Whether sweet or savoury, there’s just something about a fluffy, buttery scone served fresh from the oven that is too good to resist! The bakery I’m writing about today is a spot I discovered this summer, and they happen to have some of the best scones I’ve ever tried! Although they sell cookies, tarts and cupcakes too, scones are the heart of their business. It’s all in the name: Baker & Scone.

Baker & Scone describes their business as “dedicated to the art of the scone,” and to my knowledge (correct me if I’m wrong!) they’re the only Toronto bakery that specializes in scones. Owner Sandra Katsiou opened the shop in 2014 in the heart of Hillcrest Village (693 St Clair Ave W). I’d been wanting to visit for a while, but only stopped by for the first time this summer. I’m so glad I did, because this place is an absolute treasure!

With its farmhouse-inspired, shabby chic interior, Baker & Scone feels like a charming English cottage. I particularly love the white shiplap, decorative antique windows and eye-catching statement pendants.

In the warmer months, visitors can sit out front and enjoy their scones al fresco.

One of my favourite things about Baker & Scone is their extensive variety of unique flavour combinations. Whether you prefer sweet or savoury (or like me, both!) there’s an option for everyone. You can view their full list of flavours here, but note that they rotate flavours seasonally and bake everything fresh daily, so what’s available in store will vary on a day-to-day basis. When Tania and I visited, the flavours on offer included Feta Spinach, Cheddar Chive & Dill, Chocolate Babka, Lemon Currant, Blueberry White Chocolate and Raspberry White Chocolate.

We ordered the Cheddar Chive & Dill and the Blueberry White Chocolate, along with two lattes, and enjoyed them at one of the indoor tables. One thing I love about “eating in” at Baker & Scone? Each scone comes with a hefty serving of butter on the side (because what’s a scone without butter!?) Both the cheddar and blueberry scones were delicious. I especially loved the blueberry, which was sprinkled with sugar and absolutely bursting with berries. The portions are also quite generous – I was surprised by how full I was after!

If you prefer your scones with a side of jam, you can get one of these adorable mini jars from Niagara-based jam-maker Greaves.

If you’re in the mood for a full meal, Baker & Scone also serves a menu of brunch-y dishes, from yogurt parfaits to soups, salads and tartines. They make cookies and brownies too! How cute are these sprinkle cookies?

You can also order scones to-go (we’ve been back since and done this.) They have the cutest branding and packaging, so it makes a great gift – who wouldn’t want to receive a box of freshly baked scones? Another fabulous gift idea as we approach the holidays: their “Scone In A Jar” baking mix, so you can make your own swoon-worthy scones at home. You can also buy jars of their homemade cardamom granola, which is what goes into their yogurt parfaits.

Baker & Scone is open daily from 8am-3pm for dine-in or take-out (except Mondays, when they close at 2pm.) You can also buy their products at any Pusateri’s location. According to their website, Baker & Scone is planning to open a second location at Designers Walk soon. I’ll update this post as soon as more details are available!
